P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
NOVEMBER 2004
The State of California Employment Development Department (EDD) for the second consecutive year hosted an exciting P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network (PCN) monthly meeting for the November 2004. PCN extends a large appreciation to all of the managers at the Crenshaw Job Service facility. Special thanks to Michael Dolphin, Gloria Smith, Office Manager, LaVerne Daniels, Willa Robinson, and Paul K. Drummer. Davi Dancy, Assistant Office Manager created a wonderful presentation with the refreshment and PCN wishes to acknowledge that distinctive touch. We are greatly appreciative of Portia Smith for inviting the PCN to meet at the EDD-Crenshaw facility.
The information was flowing with high energy and information from each presenter, sharing various opportunities on how to help people with jobs and self-sufficiency programs. Listed in the order of presentation, the following offers a snapshot about each presenter who encouraged us to follow-up with them for gathering more information and client referrals.
A great beginning to the presentations came from the Life Developer & Author of “Jump-Start Your Life®" & Building Lives through Building Bridges, Ms. Silva Mirzoian. Ms. Mirzoian stressed that anyone who places his or her passions and dreams into action will have success. She encouraged those who have clients that need more enrichment on how to make their respective life better to contact her for training and couching opportunities. www.asksilva.com.
Next was Dr. Thomas E. Wade, Ph.D., the Director of Triton Institute, Inglewood, CA, who shared very topical educational information on the computerized office training available at his school. There are full tuition grants for GAIN participants and the Triton Institute has developed an effective partnership with Springfield College for those aspiring to acquire a Bachelors or higher university degree. Dr. Wade’s office number is (310) 330-0129, or info@tritoninstitute.org.
PCN was honored to have the County of Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department represented by two Deputies, Blanche Octave and Jeanna Cali. The department is seeking deputy candidates for the Sheriff’s training academy. In addition, there are numerous civilian positions available with the department, including nursing, administrative, medical, food service, pharmaceutical, laundry services, dietitian, elevator mechanics, custodial, and other employee related service job. Deputy Octave’s office number is (562) 946-7054, or beoctave@lasd.org.
With the presentation bases loaded a home run was hit by Mr. Marlan Cooper, Branch Recruiter for Brinks Inc., who provided remarkable insights into various careers with the Brink’s organization including Transportation and Cash Logistics, Supply Transportation, and Home Security operations. The employment benefits and pay are quite comparable to any industry and the advancement opportunities appear rapid. Mr. Cooper is a good motivating presenter for a variety of clients needing direction for career selection. His office number is (213) 763-4008, or marlan.cooper@brinksinc.com.
