P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
Wednesday, May 12, 2010

The P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network (Promoting Opportunities with Essential Resources) is very proud of the dedicated work and support provided by Jobing.com.  Flawlessly, Jobing.com helped to deliver outstanding information on job opportunities, training and social media networking as part of the May 2010 meeting.  A special thank you is extended to Ms. Sheila Wiley, Jobing.com’s Community Relations Director for the Greater Los Angeles area for donating her time and talent with hosting and agenda development, which resulted in an array of excellent presenters.  Ms. Wiley can be reached by email at sheila.wiley@jobing.com.

Maria Whitaker, Placement Coordinator at the Norwalk Campus for the NTMA Training Centers ofSouthern California gave a valuable overview on the opportunities for individuals wanting to learn the basics of machining.  The National Training Machining Association (NTMA) is an educational provider of instructions for the operation of conventional machining equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and saws. Instruction is also provided in safety, quality control and inspection procedures, shop theory, precision measuring instruments, mathematics, blueprint reading, and basic CNC operation.  Instruction time is divided equally between classroom, computer lab, and shop, providing a unique blend of practical theory and hands-on experience. Upon graduation, the Machinist Trainee may find entry-level employment as an operator of a lathe, mill, grinder, drill press, etc. in the machining and tooling industry.  Ms. Whitaker can be reached at (562) 921-3722, or email at maria.whitaker@trainingcenters.org.

Arif Sayed, Director, ABCO Technology, acquainted the meeting attendees about the specialized programming classes designed for clients who have special IT requirements simulated to the current and future job environment.  ABCO Technology provides training in-house and/or at the client's site with the same hands-on instructional processes.  ABCO Technology offers University of California's degree programs with academics and professional training, plus degree programs and Associate's degree programs that include an internship.  ABCO Technology has a Career Services Department working with students on their resume writing, interview preparation, and placement assistance so that when they graduate, students are on the path to career success. Mr. Sayed can be reached at (310) 259-8961, or by email at asayed@atuc.org.  On top of Mr. Sayed’s fine presentation, Mr. Charles Paskel, Career Counselor with ABCO Technology Inc. bestowed an inspirational background on how his advice to students helps encourage and impressively motivates them to do more with their new found experience in the tooling and machining industry.

George Mota, Recruiter, Horizon Foods, shared a unique opportunity to work as a food sales consultant.  Since 1979, Horizon Foods has been the one-stop gourmet food source by providing fresh personally delivered quality food.  Horizon Foods is a place to start a career with great benefits and growth potential, for those candidates that desire to satisfy customers.  Mr. Mota described the outside sales position as one that has a balance between being an independent contractor and salaried sales executive. Also, Horizon Foods has other positions including Administrative Assistant, Manager, Warehouse Manager, Regional Manager, Distributor, Partner, and Corporate Trainer.  Mr. Mota can be reached at (818) 565-5506, or by email at gmota@horizonfoods.com.

Sahar Andrade, Sahar Consulting, a global marketing and event management firm contributed an awe-inspiring look at social media and the value of business networking.  Ms. Andrade reminded the meeting attendees that social media is about engagement, a 2-way conversation that works to facilitate a continuing dialogue and communication all the while building relationships.  The social media includes search engines, social networks, blogs, Vblogs, micro-blogs, message boards, instant messaging, webcasts, emails and podcasts.  Effective 2-way engagements should be timely, transparent, honest, responsive, personal and listening carefully.  Ms. Andrade can be reached at (818) 554-4737, or by email at www.SaharConsulting.com. To receive a complete PowerPoint copy of Ms. Andrade’s Social Media presentation, you can get a 52 page PDF copy posted on the front page of the PCN web site: www.BizPartnership.biz.

Dean Jones, CEO of the Southland Partnership Corporation, the management nonprofit public benefit group of the P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network, briefly expressed his thoughts about social service providers being essentially in the help business.  The correlation being that the PCN is in-place to extend opportunities wherever possible, thereby expediting human delivery services, whether for jobs, trainings, are other essential resources for community development.  For that reason, some of the strategic community tools available via the PCN include;

  1. Daily Internet community job site management for www.IStartOnMonday.com,
  2. Monthly coordination of P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network meetings that share recruitment, funding, training, and associated workforce projects, and
  3. Annual presentation of the Choreographers of Careers© awards program.

Mr. Jones’ office number is (310) 637-7248, or email POWERSOLA@aol.com.
