P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
June 10, 2009The P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network (PCN) is privileged to have the amazing City of Carson to serve as host for the June 2009 meeting. This was the first time in PCN’s history having the City of Carson host a monthly PCN meeting and the members were pleasingly informed by the agenda participants, while sitting in the outstanding atmosphere of the posthumously named Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center. The PCN wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Charlotte Callegari and Barry Waite, City of Carson Career Center Managers for making all of the arrangements and coordinating such a fine meeting. Ms. Callegari can be reached at (310) 233-4883, or by email at ccallega@carson.ca.us
Carson’s Mayor Jim Dear welcomed everyone to the City of Carson. He briefly talked about how jobs and commerce are linked together for the residents and businesses in the area. Mr. Dear was very complimentary about the success of the P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network and encouraged many more such meetings bringing government, education and industry together
Joseph Rouzan, Business Development Manager, City of Los Angeles Community Development Department presented on a large variety of business growth programs offered through the City of Los Angeles. One program is the Federal Work Opportunity Credit program that gives any business hiring qualified individuals from nine targeted areas a reduction in federal tax liability by as much as $2,400 per year and summer youth employees is $1,200. Lisa Ivy, Voucher Coordinator, Los Angeles Community Development Department supported Mr. Rouzan on sharing a number of other business programs including the Enterprise Zone hiring tax credit. There are three State Enterprise Zones in Los Angeles and employers may reduce their State Income Tax, whereby a business has the potential of earning $37,440 in tax credits per qualifying employee over a five-year period. Mr. Rouzan can be reached by email at Joseph.Rouzan@lacity.org and Ms. Ivy can be reached by email at Lisa.Ivy@lacity.org
Kerry Kaneichi Regional Recruiter for the U. S. Census Bureau, Long Beach Office, provided a positive invitation to those wanting to be part of the 2010 United States Census collection. This represents the 23rd decennial review of its citizenry taken by the US government, where a number of positions are available for job seekers including office managers, assistant field managers, supervisors, technical assistants, quality assurance and non-supervisory spots. Information on these and other opportunities are posted via the Internet at http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/ Mr. Kaneichi can be reached at (310) 383-5268, or by email at kkaneichi@aol.com.
Kevin Turner Regional Recruiter for the U. S. Census Bureau is a permanent recruiter for the bureau covering Southern California and Hawaii. The decennial census does not include the regular 60,000 residential reviews that occur every year in his region, plus the information gathered for the Bureau of Labor Statistics on crime, health care, housing and unemployment. Mr. Turner contributed some constructive wisdom on recruitment and job candidate referral. He indicated that as job developers we must always take the posture that a candidate is a reflection of ourselves and we must at all time recruit with the truth. Thereby always improving candidates to reflect the best and we must set the example with our own appearance and business behavior. Mr. Turner can be reached at (800) 992-3529, or email by Kevn.turner@census.gov
Barry Waite, City of Carson’s Workforce Manager set in motion a great overview of the City’s Job Clearinghouse and business collaboration’s with the Carson Career Center. Mr. Waite stated that City works closely with local businesses as without good commerce a City does not survive. The City of Carson has an outstanding summer job program for youth and interfaces well with the CA State Dominguez Hills University, Los Angeles Harbor and El Camino Colleges to ensure an educated, trained and dedicated workforce for the area.
Dean Jones, CEO, Southland Partnership Corporation, recognized the long and concerted support given by Robert Hamm, Los Angeles Unified School District, who is retiring at the end of June 2009. He has graciously and consistently sought to include all potential candidates on the jobs open at the Los Angeles Unified School District and the PCN members wish Mr. Hamm a prosperous long and enjoyable retirement.
Also, Mr. Jones briefly discussed how job developers make a difference in the lives of many and sharing recruitment and training opportunities between agencies is our respective socio-economic development responsibilities. The free community web site board is doing fine with assisting in this outreach garnering over 150,000 unique visitors for the month of May alone. Anyone wanting to share their job and training leads are encouraged to send them via the email and they will be posted on the web site, www.ISartOnMonday.com within one business day. This community service program is part of the non-profit public benefits provided by the Southland Partnership Corporation, [Federal I.D. #91-2167324], which enhances the PCN member’s ability to extend opportunities to a much broader base of job seekers and employers, in order to better reach and meet the needs of all southern California organizations and businesses.
