Meeting Summary
July 9, 2008The Los Angeles Job Corps is a high level training and placement center working with our youth and producing some fantastic outcomes. Indicative of their brilliance is how well the Los Angeles Job Corps hosted the P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network’s (PCN) July 2008 monthly meeting. The information shared by each presenter was impressive and above all, the PCN members shared a plethora of vital information for job development and training resources.
We want to expressly thank Jalonn Harrison, Los Angeles Job Corps’ School-to-Work Coordinator for coordinating this extremely informative meeting. Also, we extend big kudos to Cathay Farrar, Marquise Brown and the Los Angeles Job Corps students for supporting the meeting coordination.
Cathy Farrar, Business and Community Liaison for the Los Angeles Job Corps provided an excellent overview on how the students are educated through their programs. Los Angeles Job Corps is providing technical training to people 16 to 24 years of age on a voluntary enrollment basis. Kim Brown, Business Development Manager for the City of Los Angeles’ Community Development Department provided a large range of financial improvement products for companies operating in the City. The City offers tax rebates, tax credits, loans, job training vouchers, employee hiring credits and a great deal more. Ms. Brown encouraged the PCN members to share this information with employers and to have them contact her if they any interest or questions about the advantages of operating a business in the City of Los Angeles. Perlita Pulido, Human Resources Coordinator for the Staples Center and Nokia Theatre L.A. Live shared some exciting job positions with several immense organizations. Presenting with Ms. Pulido was Joe Herrera, Director of Human Resources for the Staples Center. Giving the World a Reason to Cheer is the theme of how the Staples Center and Nokia Theatre are attracting qualified job candidates. They are currently hiring for the phase 2 of the construction project apart of L.A. Live and are having a two-day job fair August 26 – 27, 2008 in order to fill many new positions. Dean Jones, Director for the PCN announced that the Choreographers of Careers Awards committee is seeking nominations for the 2008 recognition program. The awards program this year is hosted by the Los Angeles World Airports on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. There are six remaining people that the PCN wishes to recognize for the 2008 program. Should you want to recognize a staff member form your respective organization that is demonstrating outstanding outcomes for placing and/or training people now is the time. Since 2004, over thirty people have received this awe-inspiring recognition by their peers. Nominees are being accepted until August 1, 2008, or until filled. PCN started in January 2001, focused on job coordination for community residents in order to assist in public & private sector work placement. The PCN members are community builders serving to identify, nurture, & mobilize local assets by enhanced networking to rejuvenate economies, strengthen business investments, & ultimately build up civil society. The PCN meets monthly sharing job recruitment, funding, training, workforce projects, & other related topics at various member locations.
