P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
Wednesday, January 13, 2010Loyola Marymount University (LMU), Extension Department, provided an impressive grouping of instructive job and training strategies as part of the January 2010 Power Collaborative Network meeting. The PCN members wish to thank Fay Craton for establishing and coordinating this distinguished summit. Ms. Craton can be reached by email at fay.craton@lmu.edu.
Cherie Schenck, Ph.D., Senior Director, LMU Extension Department provided an outstanding overview about this amazing university and the PCN members were extremely appreciative with the enthusiasm demonstrated surrounding the wealth of information from the department educators.
Dustin Stevenson, Director, South Bay Workforce Investment Board (WIB) shared with the PCN members an ambitious goal of creating 10,000 new jobs in the Los Angeles County by September 2010. Small businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies have an opportunity to train employment candidates and their salaries will be covered by the program. The program has $160 million from federal stimulus funds and they are working with 40 work source centers to make this a reality. Interested parties can call (310|) 970-7796, or go the Internet at www.employmentstimulas.org.
Mr. Stevenson indicated that employers will need to follow their normal hiring procedures such as background checks, drug testing, interviews, etc. If they hire from these participants then they are paid $10 per hour, including worker’s compensation, by the City of Hawthorne who has the contract with the South Bay WIB. This is a six month program for the employer in hopes that they will see value and make a permanent hire. Mr. Stevenson’s can be reached by email at, dstevenson@sbwib.org.
Dean Jones, CEO, Southland Partnership Corporation, emphasized the new high-tech job tool available on the web site, www.IStartOnMonday.com. All PCN members can now post their respective job, training, and social service announcements from their personal computer. This special web site has been upgraded with an easy access posting process that allows PCN members to use a private personal user name and password to upload logos, images, and attachments that coincide with posted user messages for all site visitors to quickly learn about the large opportunities throughout the greater Los Angeles area.
This is value added media outlet similar to advertising in a newspaper, making a radio appearance, or sharing a television PSA, where the difference is it is free of charge and quick for all PCN members. You do need to receive an invitation code to get started, which can be acquired email from the Southland Partnership Corporation office. This is the most universal outreach business tool available for socioeconomic opportunities and development via the Internet. This community service program is part of the non-profit public benefits provided by the Southland Partnership Corporation, [Federal I.D. #91-2167324], which through promotional outreach efforts enhances the PCN member’s ability to extend opportunities to a much broader base of job seekers and employers, in order to better reach and meet the needs of all southern California organizations and businesses. Mr. Jones’ office number is (310) 637-7248, or email POWERSOLA@aol.com.
