P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
Wednesday, February 10, 2010

The South Los Angeles Healthy Marriage Demonstration Project under the leadership of the Personal Involvement Center conducted an outstanding meting for the P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network (PCN).  Special appreciation is extended to the team that put together such an informative array of presenters, including Tanya McDonald, Barbara Lynn, Dora Aquino, and Sylvia Alonzo for their devoted work and coordination of the February, 2010 meeting.  Ms. McDonald can be reached at (323) 295-2353, or by email at tmcdonald@picservices.org.

Maxine Perryman-Diggs, Executive Director for the Personal Involvement Center gave an exceptional account on how to start and maintain a highly effective non-profit organization.  A clear mission and vision statement are imperative for operating and funding a nonprofit organization.  Maintaining core values that are culturally specific to the service population are also vital components.  Attracting valued board members, secretary and treasurer rounds out the executive leadership with the executive director.   Overall, aside from the many legal aspects of running a nonprofit the heart of the matter comes down to effectual leadership and efficient management.  Ms. Perryman-Diggs can be reached at (323) 565-2303, or mperryman@picservices.org.

Sergeant Adam Moore, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), along with several colleagues, gave a high-quality overview on the LAPD’s Boot Camp designed for their Juvenile Impact Program.  Their specific target groups are individuals 9 and 15 years of age.  The boot camp is held on Saturdays, 12 weeks in row, where the targeted child and their respective parent(s) are enrolled together. [The parent attends parenting classes and is called when needed].  The goal is to take at-risk juveniles in the LAPD’s 77th Division area and instill a positive, permanent change in their behavior.  To correct and prevent negative and/or criminal behavior and attitudes in at risk juvenile recruits by instilling discipline, self-esteem and respect for themselves and others.  Also a mandatory parenting class which consist of educating parents on how to discipline their children within the boundaries of the law, recognizing possible gang and narcotics involvement and increasing the communication between themselves and their children.

The majority of students participating in the Boot Camp program are court-ordered by a judge.  Sergeant Moore can be reached at the 77th Community Police Station at (213) 485-4285, or 35380@lapd.lacity.org.

Roberto Recillas, United Peace Officers Against Crime / Personal Involvement Center supported the presentation provided by LAPD.  He added how his program opens job and training doors for kids.  Mr. Recillas can be reached at (323) 482-9669, or rrecillas@picservices.org.

Annette “Chi” Hughes, MSW, owner of A.NetteWork shared a concise summary on how people plus expertise equals brain trust.  Ms. Hughes has over two decades of experience working with the not-for-profit sector, particularly community-based organizations.  A.NetteWork operates in response to the growing number of community-based organizations seeking guidance in program planning and resource development.  Her company also supports fund development by creating linkages between funding sources and community-based organizations.  Ms. Hughes can be reached by email; Chi@ANetteWork.org or by phone (310) 597-1934.

Dean Jones, CEO, Southland Partnership Corporation, emphasized the new high-tech job tool available on the web site, www.IStartOnMonday.com.  All PCN members can now post their respective job, training, and social service announcements with easy Internet access for all site visitors to quickly learn about the large opportunities throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Each month a PCN partner will be featured on the opening page of the site.  This is value added media outlet similar to advertising in a newspaper, making a radio appearance, or sharing a television PSA, where the difference is it is free of charge and quick for all PCN members.  This community service program is part of the non-profit public benefits provided by the Southland Partnership Corporation, [Federal I.D. #91-2167324], which through promotional outreach efforts enhances the PCN member’s ability to extend opportunities to a much broader base of job seekers and employers, in order to better reach and meet the needs of all southern California organizations and businesses.  Mr. Jones’ office number is (310) 637-7248, or email POWERSOLA@aol.com.
