P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
February 11, 2009Like a precious stone, the Personal Involvement Center gave the 98th P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network (PCN) meeting tremendous value. The PCN February meeting offered the job developers in attendance the ability to add to their effectiveness with helping others, thereby easily making the Personal Involvement Center a first class ‘jewel’ of human services delivery in the City of Los Angeles.
The PCN members wish to express its most sincere appreciation to the Personal Involvement Center team that worked to host such a fine meeting, including Tanya McDonald, Barbara Lynn, Arecelia Sandoval, Alpha Timbo, Jill McCann, and Walter McMahan. Everyone is still talking about the marvelously prepared and delicious tasting hot breakfast served to the PCN members, WOW!
Tanya McDonald provided an excellent welcome on behalf of the Personal Involvement Center. Ms. McDonald’s email address is tmcdonald@picservices.org
The Personal Involvement Center team is led by the Chief Executive Officer, Maxine Perryman. Ms. Perryman walked the PCN members through the multi-level family preservation services offered by the center. The Personal Involvement Center delivers family preservation services for early education, child abuse prevention, home counseling and safe and healthy environment programs. Ms. Perryman’s email address is mperryman@picservices.org
Clinical Director Alpha Timbo provided an overview of such services that included how they work with children that have extreme behavioral issues. Clients receive social support by the Personal Involvement Center staff to meet the parents’ needs.
Walter McMahan Director or Transportation ensures that the children and family members receive the needed daily commute services to take advantage of the program services. This is coordinated with a modest vehicle fleet of seven vans.
Jill McCann is an on staff mental therapist giving value added support for the South Los Angeles Healthy Marriage Demonstration Project. This is a unique human service delivery provided by the Personal Involvement Center as working to maintain and sustain a family structure from dual parents, incarcerated parent(s), single female parent, and other challenges that are needed to mentor children under a healthy marriage bond. Ms. McCann email address is jmccann@picservices.org
On behalf of Alberto Alvarado, District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Glen Constantino, Assistant District Director, shared an important opportunity for people seeking to start a business during these times of high unemployment. Small business ownership is a vibrant method of self-employment and a way to create your own personal destiny. Most of the new stimulus dollars coming from the federal government will be to establish construction related positions. Consequently, unless job seekers are prepared for such work, business ownership may be an option for transferring work skills.
Mr. Constantino explained that the SBA was stated in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation. Mr. Constantino can be reached by email at glen.constantion@sba.gov
Kenneth Crawford, Lender Relations Specialist with the SBA added that small business is critical to our economic recovery and strength, to building America's future, and to helping the United States compete in today's global marketplace. The SBA works to help people start, build and grow businesses. Mr. Crawford can be reached by email at Kenneth.crawford@sba.gov
Marlo Afflalo, CEO of Express Employment Professionals, located in Culver City, shared how for nearly 25 years, the mission of Express Employment Professionals has been to help people find jobs and help businesses find the people and human resource services they need. Ms. Affalo and her husband own and operate their company as an integral part of a network of over 600 locations in the United States, Canada, South Africa and Australia. Each Express Employment Professionals’ office is locally owned and operated and backed by the expertise and support of an international headquarters. There goal in finding and placing candidates into positions is growth, money and time efficient.
Ms. Affalo reviewed some of the current job trends indicating that the health and education industries related positions are moving up, while construction, manufacturing and retail are trending downward for open positions for 2009. It was reassuring to learn that the Express Employment Professionals can work with some felony background clients as it depends on the circumstance of the violation. Ms. Affalo can be reached by email at marlo.affalo@expresspros.com
Dean Jones, CEO, Southland Partnership Corporation, opened the meeting by reminding everyone the importance of sharing job and training referral resources in order to provide the maximum community service available for the County of Los Angeles. Although most agencies receive no credit for referral outside of their respective job partners, it is imperative for improving our socioeconomic situation that PCN use this network to help everyone, particularly our clients.
To that extent, he reminded everyone to take advantage of the no-cost community job announcement web site, www.ISartOnMonday.com for a complete resource of active training and job programs. This community service program is part of the non-profit public benefits provided by the Southland Partnership, which enhances the PCN member’s ability to extend opportunities to a much broader base of job seekers and employers, in order to better reach and meet the needs of all southern California organizations and businesses. This technology tool is receiving 100,000 site visitors each month. Mr. Jones’ office number is (310) 637-7248, or email POWERSOLA@aol.com
The next PCN meeting is Wednesday, March 11, 2008, 10 AM – Noon, and our host is Jobing.com, 12100 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 320, Los Angeles, CA 90025. Sheila Wiley, Community Relations Manager for Jobing.com is our meeting coordinator, and her email address is: Sheila.Wiley@jobing.com
