P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network
Meeting Summary
Wednesday, April 14, 2010

We want to thank the grand State of California Employment Development Department (EDD), Crenshaw Office for hosting the April 2010 P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network (PCN) meeting.  The EDD Crenshaw Office is an originating and most consistent member of the PCN that always goes the extra mile to promote collaboration among job development efforts.  We especially want to thank Davi Dancy, Crenshaw Office Manager and LaVerne Daniels, Employment Representative for ensuring the success of this monthly collaborative meeting.

Davi Dancy, Manager, EDD-Crenshaw Office provided a warm welcome to the PCN members.  The programs offered by this office are expanding with additional workforce development partners from the California Workforce Investment Board, Local Workforce Investment Areas, employers, community-based organizations, educators, state and local government agencies, and training providers.  PCN members are encouraged to contact the EDD office should they have programs that can assist workforce placement and training for clients.  Ms. Dancy can be reached at ddancy@edd.ca.gov.

Leslie Parness, Rapid Response Coordinator for JVS Marina del Rey Worksource Center unveiled a complete overview with reference to the Los Angeles County Rapid Response Program that focuses on employers that need to downsize, lay-off or relocate their respective employees.  The services are part of the U.S. Department of Labor, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board, EDD and the Lay-off Aversion Program.  All services are available and delivered to employers and employees at no cost.

It is imperative that businesses provide a WARN notice for a plant closing, lay-off or relocation of 50 or more employees.  The JVS Marina del Rey Worksource Center, a long time supporter of the PCN, is well prepared to help people to identify new employment or services for employment transitional support. Ms. Parness can be reached at (310) 309-6000, ext 223, or by email at lparness@jvsla.org.

Roland Gilbert, Professional Development Instructor for the S.T.R.I.V.E. Program, Los Angeles Skid Row Development Corporation, presented an eye opening discussion called “Conversations With The Poor & The Homeless Seeing Blind Spots In Our Attitudes and Behaviors That Cause Us Stress, Unhappiness & Failures”.  As human service providers it is important that we acknowledge the blind spots of self-destructive attitudes and behaviors among our clients if we truly want to help them to succeed.  A highlight of the presentation addressed the reaction service providers commonly see when exposing a client’s blind spots, such as resentment, resistance, and/or revenge.  Mr. Gilbert generated group participation with reading and offering over 32 blind spot justifications that clients commonly give for not being able to excel.  Mr. Gilbert can be reached at rolandjg2002@yahoo.com, (310) 614-5239 or visit his web site at www.PowerParenting.net

Dean Jones, CEO of the Southland Partnership Corporation, an operating and founding nonprofit public benefit group of the P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network, indicated how this group has successfully emerged as a useful collaborative of business managers, government representatives and educators contributing to community development strategies.  The PCN helps to mitigate crisis management by providing on going job placement and self-empowerment programs, thereby making it easy for human service providers to freely familiarize themselves with the immense opportunities available throughout the county of Los Angeles.  In addition, some of the strategic community tools available via the PCN include;

  1. Daily Internet community job site management for www.IStartOnMonday.com,
  2. Monthly coordination of P.O.W.E.R. Collaborative Network meetings that share recruitment, funding, training, and associated workforce projects, and
  3. Annual presentation of the Choreographers of Careers© awards program.

Mr. Jones’ office number is (310) 637-7248, or email POWERSOLA@aol.com.
